چکیده

In this paper, we describe a rapid-prototyping approach to developing spoken language systems (SLSs). This new design methodology facilitates more usable and quickly implemented SLSs. Moreover, it allows SLS developers to address the delicate balance between designing dialogues that are sufficiently constraining to meet current speech recognition capabilities, yet feel natural and intuitive to the user. This rapid-prototyping methodology was developed in the service of a project to determine the feasibility of using SLSs for the Year 2000 Census in the United States.

An integrated system for teaching spoken dialogue systems technology

Spoken language systems are highly complex and teaching of students in this subject matter and in the underlying technologies could benefit greatly from instructional software. The aim of this work has been to give students hands-on experience via a fully functioning spoken dialogue system as a teaching aid. This dialogue system was built using our toolkit for spoken language technology as a de...

Rapid Prototyping for Spoken Dialogue Systems

We implemented a spoken dialogue system architecture for rapid prototyping. The features that support rapid prototyping include a clear separation of generic dialogue processing algorithms from domain and language speci c knowledge sources. In an experiment, it could be shown that six individuals could specify these domain and language speci c knowledge sources within 8 to 12 hours to come up w...

Designing and Evaluating Conversational Interfaces with Animated Characters

During the past decade, due largely to progress inspired by the DARPA Speech Grand Challenge project and similar international efforts (Martin et al. 1997; Cole et al. 1997), significant progress has occurred in the development of spoken language technology (SLT). Spoken language systems now are implemented extensively for telephony applications (Spiegel and Kamm 1997), as well as on workstatio...

Object-oriented Techniques in Grammar and Ontology Specification

Currently, much effort is spent for the creation of linguistic resources such as grammars or domain models each time a new task oriented spoken language application is deployed. The resources for different applications, though different, resemble each other enough to warrant reusability of subcomponents. In this paper, we describe the application of techniques known from object oriented program...
